About The Role
This maternity relief position provides a unique opportunity for a clinical psychologist to work within a multidisciplinary health team based at the John Hunter Children's Hospital.
You will work closely with the staff specialist, social worker, child life therapist and clinical nurse consultants to support children with various immunological conditions.
Most client contact occurs during outpatient appointments, but may include supporting young people completing a food exposure challenge as a day stay patient.
You would provide brief therapy blocks to some clients of the immunology service and may join the staff specialist for some outpatient appointments.
Clients can be supported in person or by telehealth.
The psychologist would have flexibility in working with clients at different paces – for example, a planned block of therapy appointments as well as responding to acute distress experienced by a child or family during a food exposure challenge.
The psychologist works closely with the social worker to respond to psychosocial challenges experienced by families, and works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary health team.
They would have interest in balancing client-related tasks with service-development tasks, such as leading quality improvement projects.
You will be supported in your role by the multidisciplinary team members of the immunology service, the JHCH psychology head of discipline, individual supervision with another skilled clinical psychologist working within the Children, Young People and Families network, as well as by participating in peer supervision with the JHCH psychologists.
You will have access to ongoing educational and professional development available through various platforms including HETI, grand rounds and professional development allowance.
Responsibilities
Provide cognitive behaviour therapy to children, young people and their families, focusing on exposure to avoided situations.
Deliver family therapy skills to address familial anxiety impacting parenting approaches or restrictions of the child's community engagement.
Support children and families through outpatient appointments and telehealth.
Respond to acute distress during food exposure challenges.
Collaborate with the social worker and multidisciplinary health team to address psychosocial challenges.
Balance client-related tasks with service-development activities, including leading quality improvement projects.
Qualifications
Current registration as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited postgraduate clinical psychology qualification of no less than two years full-time duration or a recognised equivalent, displayed on the Psychology Board of Australia website.
