Help make a meaningful impact across the Cairns community by supporting Council's Community Safety objectives with proactive outreach, strong stakeholder relationships and an evidence‐based approach to assisting vulnerable cohorts. This role plays a key part in promoting safety, wellbeing and coordinated responses to issues such as homelessness, rough sleeping, domestic and family violence, and emerging community safety concerns.
What we're looking for
We're seeking a resilient, compassionate and community‐minded professional with experience in housing, homelessness, community safety or a related field. You'll be comfortable engaging with vulnerable or complex individuals in public settings and skilled at building trust, de‐escalating conflict and navigating sensitive situations with sound judgement. You'll bring a solid understanding of referral pathways, local service systems and collaborative practice, and be confident collecting and interpreting data to inform decision‐making. Strong communication, cultural competence, ethical judgement and the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team are essential. A current driver's licence is required, with First Aid or tertiary qualifications in community services, social work or similar considered advantageous.
What you'll be doing
* Conducting coordinated outreach with people experiencing homelessness, rough sleeping or other vulnerabilities in public spaces.
* Building rapport and providing referrals to appropriate services, support programs and housing pathways.
* Working closely with Community Safety Officers to respond proportionately to public safety and amenity concerns.
* Maintaining strong partnerships with key agencies including Housing, Anglicare, Mission Australia and other service providers.
* Identifying emerging safety and wellbeing issues to support early intervention approaches.
* Coordinating Council's community-facing domestic and family violence initiatives.
* Collecting and analysing data to inform operational and strategic responses.
* Supporting disaster preparedness, response and recovery for vulnerable cohorts.
* Preparing high-quality reports, records and correspondence in line with Council standards.
