Team and Project
See yourself in our team – Bankwest's Technology Division develops and executes all technical change within the organisation, ensuring the leverage of technology to deliver the Bankwest strategy. The division works on a wide variety of technologies and projects with the support of a dedicated team in an Agile methodology. Our team is responsible for the world‑leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of the bank – from product platforms for our customers to essential tools within our business.
You'll be part of the Customer Trust and Security crew, responsible for protecting customers' money and data by delivering secure, resilient banking experiences. They build trust through payment fraud and scam prevention, privacy controls, and transparent tools that help customers transact safely and confidently.
Role Responsibilities
As a Staff Engineer, you will lead the development of cloud‑native, event‑driven, and micro‑services‑based architectures. This role involves both hands‑on engineering and technical leadership, including mentoring others and shaping architectural decisions, as well as promoting AI‑assisted development practices within engineering teams. You will also be involved in all aspects of the delivery from solution design and development to production rollout.
People we're looking for
* Possess full‑cycle engineering experience: ideation, technical design, build, testing (unit, integration, system), release, and ongoing maintenance.
* Actively embrace and integrate AI‑driven solutions (including LLMs and agentic AI approaches) to enhance our engineering workflows and product capabilities.
* Collaborate with peers and help grow capabilities within the squad and across the crew.
* Are passionate about learning new tools and technologies and are constantly thinking outside the box.
* Lead design and delivery of event streaming and micro‑services using AWS.
* Provide technical leadership on system design, performance, and security patterns.
* Work closely with architects and product owners to deliver scalable, customer‑first solutions.
* Champion AI‑assisted tools for code generation, API documentation, testing, and security.
Tech Skills
* Programming: C# or Python.
* Frontend: React, Angular or similar.
* AWS Cloud: Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway, DynamoDB, RDS, ElastiCache, CloudWatch.
* Event Streaming: Kafka/MSK consumer/producer patterns, SQS/SNS queuing and notifications.
* APIs: RESTful API design & management, OAuth/JWT for authentication & authorization.
* Databases: DynamoDB, RDS, schema optimisation.
* Documentation: OpenAPI/Swagger for API specifications.
* Familiar with DevSecOps practices and tooling – GitHub Actions, SonarQube, Jira, Snyk, AppDynamics, Confluence, Cucumber, ServiceNow.
* Any experience with AI build tools/assistant (Roo Code, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cline), testing automation (AI‑generated unit, integration, and end‑to‑end tests)
