About First Step Legal
First Step Legal (FSL) was established in 2008 as a Health Justice Partnership (HJP) within First Step, a not-for-profit mental health and addiction clinic in St Kilda. It is a specialist community legal centre providing pro bono legal advice, casework, and representation to some of the most marginalized in the community.
FSL is NAS-accredited and a member of the Federation of Community Legal Centres. Its services have expanded to include health, housing, and community service partners, such as the First Step Program, Windana Residential Rehabilitation, Alfred Health (St Kilda Road Outpatient Clinic), Better Health Network, Launch Housing, and Bridge It.
FSL receives referrals solely from our partner organizations and prioritizes clients engaged in treatment, recovery, and therapeutic interventions supporting their wellbeing.
About the Role
FSL has received funding under the National Partnership in Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Response to design and deliver a specialist legal program addressing male family violence, called SWAP. This program focuses on safety, wellbeing, and accountability. You will utilize your criminal law expertise, working alongside FSL’s family law team, social workers, and partner professionals to strengthen accountability for men who use violence.

Salary and Conditions
This is a full-time position (or part-time via job share) for a fixed term of two years, contingent on ongoing funding. The role is subject to a 6-month probation period. Conditions are under the SCHADS Award. Salary is negotiable based on skills and experience.
