Tasman District Council is looking for a Biosecurity Officer to join our Marine and Terrestrial team within the Environmental Services Group. About the Role
As a Biosecurity Officer, you'll play an important role in delivering the Tasman‐Nelson Regional Pest Management Plan, helping landowners, community groups and partner agencies manage pests across our diverse district.
You'll be out in the field undertaking pest surveillance and inspections, working with landowners to manage pest incursions, and providing practical and trusted advice to the community. Your keen eye will spot new incursions, and your technical expertise will advise on ongoing management. Our education first approach will see you working with your colleagues across the Tasman district to improve biosecurity awareness and capability in our community.
This role is varied, hands‐on and community-focused, with a blend of fieldwork, relationship building, reporting, and collaboration.
This role is responsible for leading projects across the Tasman District and will be focussed on community connection in Golden Bay. Preference will be given to candidates able to be based in Golden Bay.
What You'll Be Doing:
* Delivering pest management programmes under the Biosecurity Act and Tasman Nelson Regional Pest Management Plan
* Conducting surveillance, inspections, and data collection across the Tasman region.
* Working with landowners, iwi, community groups, and partner agencies to give practical biosecurity advice.
* Preparing educational materials and representing Council at community events.
* Ensuring accurate reporting using GIS and Council systems.
About You To be successful in this role, you will bring:
* A qualification in biosecurity, biological sciences, or a related discipline.
* Practical experience in pest management (minimum three years).
* Strong communication skills and the ability to relate to a wide range of people.
* Good judgment, organisation, and problem‐solving ability.
* Aptitude for new technology and continuous improvement
* A current driver's licence and physical fitness to meet fieldwork requirements.
* Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and comfort working within te ao Māori.
