PhD Researcher in Sustainable Construction
This PhD project is an exciting opportunity to explore innovative approaches to 3D printing of earth-based construction materials. You will be working at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing, developing new systems and technologies that can improve access to affordable and climate-responsive housing in regional and remote communities.
About the Project
This PhD sits within an ARC Linkage Project with industry partners, giving you the chance to work on a real-world problem with significant impact. You will have the freedom to shape your own research direction within the broader project, allowing you to develop a portfolio of work that reflects your interests and strengths.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
* Designing and developing new multi-feed extrusion systems for clay and fibrous earthen mixes
* Engineering earthen materials to print better, build higher, and perform more sustainably
* Exploring the potential of modern fabrication techniques to reconnect us with local and culturally grounded building materials
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
* A Honours or Master's degree in architectural engineering, civil/materials engineering, architecture, or a related field
* Experience with digital design tools (e.g., Rhino, Grasshopper)
* Experience in 3D construction printing
* Strong experimental, analytical, and problem-solving skills
* A genuine interest in sustainability, digital fabrication, and new construction methods
