Overview
Upper Yarra Secondary College is located in Yarra Junction in the Yarra Valley, 65 kilometres from Melbourne. The college has an enrolment of 800 students, many of whom travel extensive distances to attend. It is well regarded for providing a safe, healthy and supportive environment that nurtures self‑esteem, leadership qualities, talent, curiosity and optimism. Students come from a wide range of socio‑economic backgrounds with a socio‑economic filter (SFO) of 0.55.
Innovation and Future Directions
1. The college completed a review in 2022 with future directions linked to literacy and numeracy, community engagement and high expectations across the institution.
2. A model of inquiry learning (FLIP – Future Learners Inquiry Program) has been established for Years 7 and 8, incorporating an open‑plan learning environment, fewer teaching staff for more time with students, a fully integrated inquiry‑based curriculum and personalised learning processes that address diverse learning styles.
3. Innovations in reading and writing, such as Independent Reading, Readers and Writers Workshops and a Sharing Classrooms program, are improving pedagogy. Teachers participate in Professional Learning Teams and employ action‑research strategies in classroom practice.
Selection Criteria
* SC1 Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including literacy and numeracy, and experience responding to student learning needs.
* SC2 Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing high‑impact teaching strategies, guiding by how students learn, and evaluating program impact on student growth.
* SC3 Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning, using data to inform practice and providing feedback to students and parents.
* SC4 Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and experience establishing collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader community.
* SC5 Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values and experience reflecting on practice and engaging in continuous professional learning.
Role Description
The classroom teacher classification has two salary ranges, Range 1 and Range 2. The primary focus is on planning, preparing and teaching programmes to achieve specific student outcomes, and engaging in critical reflection to improve knowledge and skills. As experience grows, teachers may undertake additional duties appropriate to their salary range, qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities
* Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students.
* Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum programme within the school.
* Undertaking other classroom teaching‑related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal.
* Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings, staff meetings, camps and excursions.
* Undertaking other non‑teaching supervisory duties.
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the specified curriculum area(s).

Qualification Requirements
* Provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
* If completed an Australian postgraduate‑level initial teaching program on or after 1 January 2024, demonstrate satisfactory completion of a postgraduate‑level accredited initial teacher education programme recognised by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority.
* If graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme after 1 July 2016, demonstrate that the programme included successful completion of the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE).
