We are seeking an experienced Environmental & Waste Management Manager to lead environmental compliance, healthcare waste management, and sustainability initiatives across our organisation.
About the Role
The Environmental Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring environmental management systems to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, healthcare waste regulations, and NDIS Practice Standards. The role focuses on the safe management of healthcare and hazardous waste, including infectious waste and sharps, while supporting environmental risk management and sustainability initiatives within disability support environments. This role plays a critical part in ensuring safe environments for participants receiving care in community and home-based settings.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Compliance & Governance
* Ensure organisational compliance with NDIS Practice Standards, environmental legislation, and healthcare waste regulations.
* Develop and maintain environmental and waste management policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
* Monitor environmental compliance across service delivery sites and participant support environments.
* Liaise with regulatory bodies, environmental agencies, and licensed waste disposal contractors.
* Maintain environmental records, reports, and compliance documentation.
Healthcare & Hazardous Waste Management
Oversee the safe management of healthcare waste generated during disability support services, including:
* Infectious waste
* Sharps (needles, syringes, lancets)
* Pharmaceutical waste
* Chemical and hazardous waste
Responsibilities include:
* Implementing systems for proper waste segregation using colour-coded waste streams.
* Ensuring appropriate collection, packaging, labelling, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous waste.
* Managing contracts and compliance with licensed waste disposal providers.
* Ensuring compliance with infection control and waste management guidelines.
Environmental Risk Management
* Identify environmental risks associated with service delivery activities.
* Conduct environmental risk assessments across operational locations and participant environments where services are delivered.
* Investigate incidents involving environmental hazards or waste management breaches.
* Develop emergency response procedures for environmental incidents and hazardous waste exposure.
Staff Training & Awareness
* Deliver training and guidance to staff on:
* Safe handling of healthcare waste
* Sharps management
* Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
* Environmental safety and infection prevention
* Promote environmental awareness and safe work practices across the organisation.
Environmental Monitoring & Continuous Improvement
* Conduct environmental and waste management audits across operational sites.
* Monitor environmental performance indicators.
* Implement improvement initiatives to enhance sustainability and environmental performance.
* Support organisational initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving sustainability practices.
Skills and Experience
* Demonstrated experience in environmental management, waste management, or environmental compliance.
* Strong knowledge of environmental legislation and healthcare waste regulations.
* Experience managing hazardous or clinical waste systems.
* Experience developing policies, procedures, and compliance frameworks.
* Strong risk management and incident investigation capability.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Experience within healthcare, disability services, aged care, or regulated environments will be highly regarded.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Sustainability, Environmental Management, or a related field.
Desirable:
* Experience working within NDIS or healthcare environments.
* Training or certification related to environmental management systems or infection control.
Salary
$95,000 – $115,000 per year plus superannuation, depending on qualifications and experience.
