About GCASA

GCASA is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation funded by the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), and Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

We provide trauma-informed counselling, advocacy, education, and prevention services to individuals and communities affected by sexual assault across Gippsland — from Bunyip River to Mallacoota, and from the Great Divide to the coast, including Phillip Island.

With offices in Morwell, Warragul, Wonthaggi and Bairnsdale, and outreach services in Orbost, Leongatha, and Sale, GCASA is committed to promoting Respect, Dignity, Empowerment, Integrity, Excellence and Hope. We work in partnership with the community service organisations, Victoria Police Sexual Offences Child abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) who are co-located at the Morwell Multidisciplinary Centre and other community service agencies, including the Department of Families, Fairness & Housing – Child Protection.

About the Opportunity:

This is an opportunity to work part of a newly forming team supporting individuals with a cognitive and or sensory disability, and their families and kinship carers. This will be a Gippsland wide service codesigned by people with a cognitive impairment and those who support them tailored to meet their, and their families, needs. Where We Go One, We Go All.

The Parent Peer Support Connector(s) will use their own lived experience to provide emotional support, information, and practical assistance to other parents and carers including kinship carers. Their role involves empowering families, building hope, promoting choice, and linking them with community services while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Key duties include orientation to services, helping families and kinship carers navigate challenges, and advocating for their needs and collaboration with enthusiastic professionals across health, justice, and community sectors.

Key responsibilities:

* Provide peer support and connection: Offer emotional support, information, and practical assistance to parents, carers, and kinship carers, assisting help families identified as needing advice and support.
* Promote hope and recovery: Being empathetic, inspire hope by sharing experiences and demonstrating that hope-filled engagement for their individuals or family members.
* Connect with universal and support services: Assist families in accessing and navigating community services, non-governmental organisations, and government agencies, and help to engage with appropriate supports.
* Connect individuals, families and kinship carers with pathways to vocational skills and community education.
* Advocate: Act as an advocate for families and kinship carers to ensure their needs are heard and met by service providers.
* Collaborate with teams: Work with Connect in Gippsland team members, other peer workers, and family workers and other service providers to offer holistic and family-centered care.
* Co-support group work facilitation and education sessions; linking with Empowered.


Key Selection Criteria - What You will Bring to the role


1. Lived experience: A personal history of caring for a family member, especially one with mental cognitive disability, sensory or other significant challenges.
2. Empathy and communication: Strong abilities to listen empathetically, communicate effectively and professionally, and build trusting relationships.
3. Problem-solving and knowledge development: Assisting families to further develop problem-solving capabilities.
4. Advocacy: Ability to advocate for family-centred service delivery that is sensitive to the needs of carers.
5. Collaboration: Working effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment
6. Resourcefulness: Strong networking ability to link parents, carers, and kinship to resources.

Gippsland Centre against Sexual Assault is committed to ensuring that all staff have the required skills and qualifications to conduct the work which they are employed to undertake.

GCASA will ensure that staff are appropriately credentialed and have a defined scope of practice. Staff must provide the following original documentation, or a certified copy, prior to appointment. All staff are required to maintain their registration and credentialing requirements for the period of their employment.

The successful applicant will:

* Be willing if required to travel across the region and to Melbourne as negotiated for training and development

* Hold a current Victorian driver's licence

* Hold a current Working with Children's check

* Provide a current National Crim Check

* Undertake a DFFH Statutory Declaration relating any CP intervention, IVO and court pending.

* Will work Wednesdays to participate in agency meetings
