Our client is a council that provides a wide range of services and facilities to a diverse and growing community. The Corporate Communications Branch connects the community to council services and decisions, promotes the council and its people to a variety of audiences and stakeholders, manages reputation risk, and supports internal teams. Services are delivered through branch management, internal communications and engagement, marketing, and external communications.
Your new role
As Media and Communications Advisor, you will report to the Media Coordinator and play a key role in implementing effective media and communication strategies to enhance the council's public profile. Your responsibilities will include:
* Developing and implementing media and communication strategies to support organisational objectives
* Contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluation of media policies, processes, and procedures
* Identifying, developing, and pitching proactive media opportunities to local, state, and national media
* Providing strategic media and communication advice to elected members, senior executives, management, and staff
* Preparing media releases and speeches for elected members and executive staff for mainstream and social media platforms
* Liaising with the media and maintaining well-developed networks
* Monitoring the media and providing advice on issues affecting the council and public perception
* Producing editorial content for internal and external publications
* Undertaking research and preparing reports and recommendations on media issues, including sensitive and political matters
* Creating digital imagery suitable for broadcast or publication
* Promoting and contributing positively to health, safety, and wellbeing activities in the workplace
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will have a degree in journalism, communications, or public relations from a recognised tertiary institution, or extensive journalistic and/or public relations experience gained in a dynamic political environment or major media organisation. Previous experience in a media advisor or communications role in government, a medium to large organisation with a dedicated media arm, or in a public relations agency is desirable. You will have highly developed written and oral communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and sound experience working with social media and web-based communication tools. Possession of a current "C" class driver's licence and a Blue Card for working with children are required.
