Position Information

Wilkins Public School is a large comprehensive primary school in the Inner West of Sydney. We actively celebrate a wide range of staff, student and family diversity and 43% of our students are from a non-English speaking background. There are deep connections with the local community, in particular parent and carer involvement with school function, noted by the five P&C sub-committees. We have over 50 community users who share our facilities and provide diverse extracurricular activities for all age groups. There is a Before and After School Care centre onsite, and a Council-run preschool, and we host two Opportunity Classes (OC) in Years 5 and 6.

Our grounds are expansive with a wide range of natural outdoor learning and play spaces, and classrooms are designed to flexibly blend the indoors and outdoors. There is a well established community garden where students engage in environmental education with a specialist teacher, as well as utilising the natural environment for teaching of other curricular subjects, and for social activities. We have a large, well-resourced library, and dedicated music, drama and dance rooms. Students participate in information literacy, drama, dance, music and sports lessons under the instruction of highly qualified teacher-librarian, drama, dance music and sport specialist teachers. Our teaching staff are a dedicated team of professionals, committed to realising our school vision. Our school is also supported by our highly skilled and experienced non-teaching staff, in learning support and administration, whose wealth of experience and knowledge is invaluable to our students, staff and community.

Selection Criteria

1. Approval to teach primary English as an Additional Language or Dialect or currently enrolled in an approved qualification for teaching English as an additional language or dialect primary, as recognised by the NSW Department of Education.

3. Expertly use the EAL/D Progressions and build staff capacity to improve EAL/D learners' English proficiency by embedding effective school practices for EAL/D students into daily practice.

4. Strong understanding and application of departmental policies and procedures, including use of the EAL/D School Evaluation Framework, to plan for and implement improved whole school practices.
