About The Role

Formed in 1882, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) is a major metropolitan tertiary referral hospital and a principal provider of specialist healthcare. It remains one of the nation's most respected hospitals, with a distinguished history serving the health needs of local, statewide, national and international communities.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides advanced clinical care to pregnant women and families affected by substance use within inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The role involves comprehensive consultation and assessment, formulation of risk and development of integrated care plans that address substance use, perinatal health and parenting needs. Practice is grounded in trauma‐informed and harm reduction principles that promote engagement, safety and respect.

The position requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary and interagency partners to ensure continuity of care from hospital through to community settings. The Clinical Nurse Specialist contributes specialist advice to clinical reviews, supports shared decision‐making and participates in coordinated responses to child protection, mental health and psychosocial risk. Accurate documentation and outcome monitoring within eMR are embedded in everyday practice to support clinical governance and quality care.

The role also involves advocacy for women navigating complex health and social systems, outreach and home visiting, and ongoing dynamic risk management in line with NSW Health and Drug Health Services policies. Through reflective practice and professional leadership, the Clinical Nurse Specialist contributes to improved maternal and child outcomes during pregnancy and the first two years of life.
