We deliver and support digital government services that improve the lives of people who live and work in our beautiful city and surrounding region.

At Digital Canberra, you’ll work with passionate technologists, policy experts, and designers to build and sustain services that matter. We value respect, integrity, collaboration and innovation, and we’re committed to supporting our people to do their best work.

Digital Canberra is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Technical Writer to join the Technology Services Branch within the Customer, Data and Technology Group.

The Technology Services Branch implements and manages the ACT Government’s core ICT platforms and services that underpin service delivery across government.

Requirements

The Senior Technical Writer plays a critical role in ensuring accurate, consistent, and governance‑compliant documentation across ICT infrastructure refresh initiatives, ICT architecture artefacts, and asset management uplift activities. The role of the Senior Technical Writer ensures documentation is standardised, traceable, audit‑ready, and aligned with enterprise ICT architecture and program governance requirements. You will:

* Consolidate, update, create and maintain all types of technical design documentation across multiple program streams.
* Collaborate with ICT architects, subject matter experts, project managers, and asset management specialists to ensure documentation accuracy and completeness.
* Consolidate, update, create and maintain documentation for system design following templated models for conceptual and detailed designs based on input from existing documents and technical/architecture SMEs.
* Assist teams to create and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for junior staff skills transfer, after hours team reference and to ensure consistency of processes and tasking.

This role does not involve direct supervision of staff.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.

Eligibility/Other Requirements: This position requires a current ACT Government Personnel Vetting Program security clearance (AGSVA Baseline equivalent) or the ability to obtain and hold one. If screening is not successful, your employment will not commence or, if already commenced, your employment will be reassessed.

Notes: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of up to 12 months. An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months.

As part of the ACT Public Service (ACTPS), Digital Canberra offers some of the best hybrid and flexible working arrangements in Australia. Flexible working includes opportunities to work remotely or from a range of office locations across Canberra, with arrangements discussed with your manager based on operational requirements. The position will be based at Winyu House in Gungahlin ACT and may be required to occasionally visit other government sites across the city that technical specialists work from, to assist with collating documentation.

Please note, when in the office the workplace is designed for activity-based working (ABW). Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated workstation/desk.

How to Apply: To apply, please submit a copy of your curriculum vitae and a two‑page response addressing the “What You Require” section of the Position Description. A half-page pitch/cover letter will also be accepted in addition to the two-page response.

Applications should be submitted via the Apply Now button below.

Note: Under the ACTPS employment framework you may be placed in another role where required for the efficient administration of the service.

Where an offer of employment is for a fixed-term period, any related temporary contracts within the Territory will be issued in compliance with the requirements and applicable exceptions outlined in the Fair Work Act.
