Product Designer – Lighting Systems
This role is responsible for the end-to-end design and development of aluminium profile, linear lighting systems, and sheet-metal luminaires from initial concept through to production. You will ensure all designs meet manufacturability, performance, compliance, and cost targets while supporting the company's product strategy and roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design & Development
* Develop innovative, sustainable lighting products and systems, including aluminium profiles, linear systems, and sheet-metal luminaires
* Design modular, customisable, and cost-efficient product platforms
* Create and refine luminaire designs including mechanical structures, optical components, and safe, user-friendly installation and maintenance features
Design Validation
* Conduct design checks to ensure alignment with design briefs and the product roadmap
* Review thermal, photometric, ingress protection, and performance test reports
* Ensure compliance with relevant safety and performance standards (e.g. AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Work closely with production, marketing, sales, and product management teams across the product lifecycle
* Communicate clear design intent and technical requirements to manufacturing engineers, suppliers, and stakeholders
* Participate in design reviews, project planning, and cross-functional alignment activities
Documentation & Process
* Develop CAD models, production drawings, bills of materials, samples, SOPs, and system item creation/work orders
* Maintain CAD libraries, revision control, and test records to ensure quality and traceability
* Contribute to design guidelines, assembly instructions, and QC checklists
* Support product managers, sales, and marketing with costing, data sheets, product labels, installation instructions, and layouts
* Support automation, modularisation, and standardisation initiatives across the product platform
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Capability
* Advanced proficiency in
SolidWorks
for 3D modelling, rendering, and production drawings (experience with
SolidWorks PDM
highly regarded)
* Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes including sheet-metal fabrication, bending, CNC routing, laser cutting, welding, and 3D printing
* Experience designing with sheet metal, aluminium profiles, injection moulding, forming, and die casting
* Solid understanding of material properties, thermal management, and sustainable material options
* Comprehensive knowledge of luminaire components including LED engines, optics, drivers, thermal management, mechanical interfaces, and wiring requirements
* Familiarity with electrical wiring diagrams and lighting control interfaces
* Ability to interpret architectural drawings and lighting layouts
* Experience conducting site inspections, assessing installation conditions, identifying issues, and recommending solutions
* Experience designing for specialised environments such as outdoor, healthcare, education, correctional, and mental health facilities
* Understanding of LM-79 reports, electrical safety testing, thermal testing, IP/IK ratings, and relevant compliance standards
* Awareness of sustainable design principles including low-impact manufacturing, recyclability, and reduced-waste packaging
