* Opportunity to join the School of Medical Sciences as Genomic Research Assistant
* Part-Time (0.8 FTE), fixed term for 2 years
* Base salary $89,755 + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
The Research Assistant plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations and research processes. They contribute to specimen processing, uphold high laboratory standards, and provide essential administrative and technical support to the research team. They also collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient laboratory workflow and resource coordination.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
* process and prepare various types of human specimens under supervision
* perform DNA/RNA and high-molecular weight DNA extractions, including quality control steps
* maintain detailed records, manage sample inventories, and support biobanking activities
* liaise with genomic facilities and support lab members in coordinating research activities
* assist in data entry, word processing, and maintaining laboratory spreadsheets
* support the lab manager with budgeting, ordering supplies, and managing communications
* engage in problem-solving and adopt new techniques and protocols as required
* undertake other duties and projects appropriate within the classification level as required.
About you
* relevant tertiary qualifications or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
* experience working with human specimens and performing molecular techniques such as RT-qPCR and DNA/RNA extractions, high-molecular weight (HMW) DNA extraction, optical genome mapping (OGM)
* strong laboratory documentation and record-keeping skills, proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and basic computational tools
* excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including responsiveness to emails and professional correspondence
* demonstrated ability to build and maintain working relationships with internal team members and external collaborators
* proven problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn and apply new laboratory techniques
* high level of organisation, trustworthiness, and the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks effectively.
