The Position
Position title: Behaviour Support Practitioner

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Behaviour Support Practitioner will play a key role in the effective design, delivery and monitoring of behaviour
support services for internal and external customers with NDIS funding for behaviour support and / or psychological
assessment, therapy and training.
RELATIONSHIPS
Reporting to the Behaviour Support Manager.
Collaborating closely with all Managers and staff and customers.
Building and maintaining relationships with mainstream and specialist support providers and other key
stakeholders.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Relevant tertiary qualification in areas such as Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy or other allied
health, Community Services, Mental Health, Disability, Education, Youth Work, or working towards.
Registration with the NDIS (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support) as a Behaviour Support Practitioner,
or willingness and ability to obtain within 6 months of commencement.
Current First Aid and CPR Certificates.
Current unrestricted Australian Driver’s Licence.
Completion of NDIS Worker Orientation Module ‘Quality, Safety and You’
Experience working with people who have complex needs and/or trauma backgrounds.
Strong computer skills.
Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills

Workers, Case Managers, and Residential Support Workers.

Desirable:
Experience in case management or coordination
Highly developed knowledge of the issues, trends and philosophies underpinning the provision of
services to children, young people in OOHC and people with a disability such as positive person-
centred approaches
Experience in and the ability to support and train staff and families
Proven ability to develop and implement positive behaviour support strategies for customers
(including children, young people with a trauma background and adults with intellectual disability)
with complex and challenging behaviours of concern
Well-developed understandings of positive approaches to behaviour support and of the needs of
people with complex behaviours of concern
Knowledge of the relevant legislation, policies, work practice requirements and procedures
impacting on the delivery of services to children, young people and adults with an intellectual
disability (including the NDIS Act, 2018 and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection)
Act 1998)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Undertake functional and adaptive behaviour assessments covering all the factors, including environment,
social, communication, developmental, trauma, medical and/or psychological aspects that may be
contributing to the behaviours of concern with an emphasis on improving quality of life
Utilise psychometric tools such as the Conners and ABAS to enable the description, conceptualisation, and
prediction of relevant aspects of an individual’s functioning, behaviour, and personality
Develop written formulations and Functional Behaviour Assessment Reports that summarise the presenting,
predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating, and protective factors for individuals
Develop Interim and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans that meet the NDIS Commission requirements
for the use of Restricted Practices and support their implementation. These Plans will focus on developing
preventative, developmental, and remedial strategies to addressing behaviours of concern and improving
subjective well-being
Consider the individual’s current diagnoses and how they impact on their presentation and behaviour. This
may include working closely with psychiatrists, paediatricians, GPs, psychologists, occupational therapists,
speech and language therapists, and physiotherapists to co-design holistic interventions for the individual.
Provide capacity building Person-Centred behaviour support services to a varied and complex caseload
including people with intellectual, developmental, physical, and psychosocial disabilities.
Develop, implement and monitor programs to address the identified goals and positive behaviour support
strategies for the individual, family / carer, service providers and community (including consideration of
cultural and language diversity, ageing and mental health issues, and geographical isolation)
Engage in ongoing evaluation of the suitability and effectiveness of the implemented strategies together
with families / carers and stakeholders, both informally and through participation in regular service reviews.

Address prevention issues on a systematic level, for example appropriateness of care and current supports,
the physical environment of services and homes, service policies, staff development, staff and family
routines.
Provide training and education in the individual’s behaviour support program for family/carer, service
providers and community involved in care and support.
Research, summarise, and disseminate information about current leading research and evidence-based
practice to providers of care and support.
Operate and collaborate across professional disciplines to ensure good practice and the maximisation of
opportunities to achieve positive outcomes for the individual, their families and carers and to promote a
better understanding of positive approaches to behaviour support.
Undertake clinical case management with an emphasis on supporting individuals to reach their goals and
maximise their quality of life.
Design and deliver psychological interventions targeted at supporting individuals to develop new adaptive
and social skills, build resilience, and better manage psychological symptoms.
Participate in clinical supervision in accordance with registration requirements. An appropriate clinical
supervisor will be associated with the Behaviour Support Practitioner depending on the Behaviour Support
Practitioner’s tertiary qualifications and experience. Where appropriate, LiveBetter will arrange this
supervision which may include variation of reporting lines for this specific purpose.
RISK Staff are required to be aware of the LiveBetter’s risk and opportunity management principles and contribute
towards building a strong risk management culture. This includes:
1. undertaking operational responsibility to perform tasks and duties diligently and effectively, contributing to effective operational risk and opportunity management.
2. bringing to the attention of their managers/supervisors, risks, and opportunities within their areas of operation which may not be well mitigated and may affect the performance and reputation of LiveBetter.

NATIONAL POLICE CHECK, NDIS SCREENING CHECK, AND WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK
The position holder is required to pass and hold a current National Police Check, a NDIS Screening Check, and a Working with Children’s Check (NSW/VIC) or Blue Card (QLD). PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL ASSESSMENT The position holder is required to pass a pre-employment medical assessment, including drug and alcohol screening.
