The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Electronic Systems Technician 2 in the Office of Safety & Security.

This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

Definition: Under limited supervision, performs the more difficult tasks involving the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, machinery, and systems; may take the lead over lower-level technicians; performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education: Completion of a vocational, technical or specialized training program in electrical or electronic technology.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical or electronic components, equipment or systems.

NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute one (1) year of additional experience.

License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities
* Advise, instruct, and assist lower-level technicians in the resolution of complex and uncommon problems involving electronic and electrical equipment, machinery, and systems.
* Install electrical components and wiring systems.
* Inspect the installation of wiring systems, electrical components, meters, electronic circuitry, microprocessors, computer board components, and all equipment controlled by such systems.
* Test and troubleshoot problems with electrical components and wiring systems such as audiovisual equipment, microprocessors, security alarm systems, fire alarms, office machines and appliances, and computer board components.
* Repair electrical components and wiring systems such as microprocessors; radar traffic signal detector units; bridge lift, swing, and warning mechanisms; audiovisual equipment; and fire and security alarm systems.
* Operate volt or ohm meters, calibrations and resistance potentiometers, voltage regulators, audiovisual equipment, dual trace oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, frequency counters, and signal tracers.
* Operate computer terminal or personal computer for information processing.
* Monitor network frequencies.
* Compute numerical data by addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
* Answer questions and provide technical advice to staff and management.
* Apply established security procedures and guidelines.
* Interpret schematics.
* Code information for data entry.
* Verify entered data against source documents.
* May take the lead over lower-level technicians.
* Read journals or other publications for the purpose of keeping current knowledge of developments in the field.
* Prepare and maintain essential records and files.
* Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Knowledge and Abilities
* Knowledge of the theory and principles of electronics and electricity.
* Knowledge of procedures for testing electronic circuitry and electrical components.
* Knowledge of procedures for operating calibration and resistance potentiometers, dual trace oscilloscopes, volt and ohm meters, signal generators, and microprocessors.
* Knowledge of schematic symbol systems.
* Knowledge of electronic component color codes.
* Knowledge of transistor theory and principles.
* Ability to operate a word processor.
* Ability to measure frequency ranges.
* Ability to read various meters, gauges, and dials.
* Ability to follow written and oral directions and plans.
* Ability to operate hand and power tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, drills, and tools associated with electrical conduit and wiring work.
* Ability to operate volt or ohm meters, calibrations and resistance potentiometers, voltage regulators, audiovisual equipment, dual trace oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, frequency counters, and signal tracers.
* Ability to perform precision soldering and de-soldering for electronic circuitry work.
* Ability to install, inspect, troubleshoot, operate, and repair electrical components and wiring systems.
* Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using decimals, percentages, and fractions.
* Ability to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate relevant information from various types of sources and materials.
* Ability to synthesize facts and reach logical conclusions.
* Ability to provide guidance and assistance to lower-level technicians.
* Ability to prepare and maintain essential records and files.
* Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
* Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
