The Bequests Project Manager will play a key role in creating opportunities for the promotion, dispersal and sale of non-accessioned works of art, gifted to the Academy for such purposes. The new postholder will encourage the profile management and commercial standing of artists whose legacy has been left in the trust of the Royal Scottish Academy. They will work closely with colleagues at the RSA main office, and off-site with artists' estates and elsewhere to manage incoming gifts through digitisation and online access strategies. The postholder will join the team as the RSA looks towards its wide-reaching programme to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2026.
Key Tasks:
- In discussion with the RSA Senior Management team, collation of a strategy for dispersal of works through gifts, exhibition sales and auctions.
- Effective coordination of the handling, exhibition, storage, care and onwards dispersal of non-accessioned works of art, gifted to the RSA for such purposes.
Coordination of the cataloguing and documentation of non-accessioned gifts and bequest items to ensure that best practice is achieved.
- Direction of effective stock management of non-accessioned works of art.
- Management of the rationalisation of gifts and bequests for transfer to other collections and work with the RSA Mound team in the management of stock for sale and exhibition.
- Direct preservation of artworks to ensure that gifted items are in best condition for onward exhibition, gift or sale.
- Coordination of the RSA storage site and direct art handling procedures.
- Working with marketing colleagues to best assist artist profile and legacy development.
- Liaison with other collections, commercial galleries and auctioneers towards opportunities for non-accessioned works of art held by the RSA.
- Coordination of gifts of non-accessioned artworks to other collections.
- Management of exhibitions at partner galleries and museums.
- Collation, management and documentation of the consignment of artworks to partner galleries and museums.
- Overseeing information management, digitisation, image processing and preservation of non-accessioned works in line with requirements.
- Assisting in the development and delivery of an income strategy for the wider commercial opportunities available to enhance the non-accessioned gifts dispersal.
Salary: £36,000 + commission-based incentives
Hours: Full time (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm)
