Job Summary
We're looking for a versatile CNC Machinist to operate, program, and maintain CNC machines, producing high-precision components to engineering specs. This role involves flexibility for tasks like documentation, quoting, manual machining, and quality assurance. Key Responsibilities
* CNC Machining Operations: Program, set up, and operate CNC machines (mills, lathes) to fabricate precision parts from metals, plastics, and composites. Load materials, select tools, and monitor for accuracy and efficiency.
* Blueprint Interpretation and Programming: Read technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD/CAM files; use software like Mastercam or Fusion 360 to generate and optimise CNC programs for production.
* Quality Control and Inspection: Conduct in-process and final checks with tools like micrometers and calipers; troubleshoot issues to maintain quality and minimise downtime.
* Manual Machining Support: Handle custom or prototype work on conventional lathes, mills, or drills as needed.
* Documentation Creation: Develop setup sheets, tool lists, operation manuals, and process reports for consistency and compliance.
* Quoting and Estimation: Assist with job quotes by estimating materials, times, tooling, and labor.
* Related Workshop Activities: Manage inventory, maintain workshop tidiness, perform machine maintenance, and support assembly or packaging to meet deadlines.
* Safety and Compliance: Follow NSW Work Health and Safety regulations, use PPE, conduct risk assessments, and contribute to continuous improvement.
* Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Resolve machine issues, perform preventive maintenance, and collaborate on repairs.
Required Skills and Capabilities
* Technical Proficiency: Expertise in CNC programming and multi-axis machining (3-5 axis preferred); familiar with G-code, M-code, and CAM software.
* Precision and Attention to Detail: Work to tight tolerances (±0.01mm) and use metrology tools for inspections.
* Problem-Solving: Diagnose and fix issues logically to optimise workflows.
* Adaptability: Shift between CNC/manual tasks and handle documentation, quoting, and quality duties.
* Communication and Teamwork: Strong written/verbal skills for documentation, team collaboration, and training juniors.
* Time Management: Prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple jobs.
* Software and Tools Knowledge: Proficient in Microsoft Office; ERP systems a plus.
Qualifications and Experience
* Education: Trade qualification (e.g., Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade from TAFE); CNC programming or ISO 9001 certifications desirable.
* Experience: 3-5+ years as a CNC Machinist in manufacturing (aerospace, automotive, medical, or general engineering preferred); quoting/documentation experience a bonus.
* Other Requirements: Valid Australian work rights; willing to work shifts/overtime; physically fit for lifting (up to 20kg) and standing; clean driver's license may be needed.
