Who we are
The Portfolio Strategy Division is the department's central policy area. The division supports our ministers and the department to engage with the complex cross‐cutting policy challenges in Australian climate, energy, environment and water policy. We lead on the Cabinet and Budget processes, strategic policy, First Nations policy, whole‐of‐portfolio projects, and work to build the department's policy capability.
The Communication and Media Branch delivers internal and corporate communication and strategic communication activities in support of the department and our ministers, for the benefit of the Australian community. This includes managing the department's social media strategy and social media presence, media support services across the department and for our ministers' offices, production services including graphic design and branding, Web publishing for external‐facing departmental websites, and the development of campaign and non‐campaign materials.
Using a consultative approach, the Strategic Communication Research and Insights (SCRI) team works in partnership with departmental clients to lead and deliver innovative communication research and data analytics. By leveraging quantitative and qualitative research methods, we provide actionable evidence‐based insights to tackle communications challenges, address misinformation and disinformation, and provide policy impact across key department priorities. We achieve this through an innovative, collaborative and multidisciplinary approach.
The Job
* Conducting analysis on emerging themes, narratives, sentiments and trends related to priority policies across social media and other media platforms and developing products that leverage these insights to address communications challenges.
* Establishing and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders to understand communication research needs and expectations.
* Supporting continuous improvement through undertaking and sharing communication evaluation outcomes and incorporating findings into future work.
* Providing support to senior staff in setting priorities, managing workflows and ensuring the delivery of research outputs.
* Managing staff to contribute to a high performing culture and delivering feedback in order to build capability.

* Ability to lead a high performing and inclusive team.
* Ability to generate, interpret and effectively communicate research findings to influence internal stakeholders and support decision‐making.
* Ability to lead and manage a small team of experts, including mentoring, building capability and technical proficiency.
* Proficiency in using R, SAS, or Stata, along with the ability to utilise BI platforms such as Power BI and Tableau, and/or a demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge of social network modelling tools such as NodeXL and Nvivo for text analysis will be highly regarded.
Knowledge and experience
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research including data management, data cleaning, data modelling, developing surveys and data analysis and data visualisation.
* Expertise in a variety of research tools and techniques, and the ability to utilise such techniques to support communication and policy impact.
Eligibility
* Citizenship – To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Workplace and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
* Security Clearance – This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
* Pre‐employment Check – Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre‐employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre‐employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
