Maintenance & Instrumentation Technician (Gas Detection / Lab Facilities)

Umech is a Sydney-based specialist process engineering company delivering high-spec systems into semiconductor, R&D, pharma and cleanroom environments. Our work includes UHP gas delivery, gas detection, vacuum/exhaust systems and process utilities—often in live labs where quality and safety matter.
We're looking for a Maintenance & Instrumentation Technician who enjoys hands-on fault finding, testing/commissioning, and completing documentation promptly/properly.
The role (typical mix)
* 50% Maintenance / Service: reactive + preventative work across lab and facility systems
* 30% Testing / Commissioning: verification, function tests, recommissioning support
* 20% Quality / Reporting: clean close-outs, records, and continuous improvement
Reporting to the Quality & Maintenance Manager, you will:
Key responsibilities
Maintenance & fault finding
* Maintain and repair gas detection + instrumentation systems in lab/R&D environments
* Support maintenance across gas delivery systems, vacuum pumps, exhaust systems and process water systems.
* Diagnose faults, rectify issues, and reduce repeat failures through good root-cause analysis & thinking
Testing & commissioning
* Perform gas sensor calibration and testing
* Conduct pressure testing and helium leak testing
* Assist with equipment commissioning and functional verification of installed systems
* Exposure to Siemens PLC environments (no PLC programming expierence required— but nice to have)
Quality & reporting
* Produce clear service reports and close-out records (photos, test results, actions taken)
* Maintain professional site standards and support continuous improvement (checklists, repeat-fault trends)
Working conditions
* Mon–Fri standard hours
* On-call roster: approx. 1 week every 5 weeks, paid OT rates
* Travel: Sydney Metro primarily, with occasional regional/interstate work (around once every 2 months)
* Car allowance for work use + tools and laptop provided
About you
We're open to people from instrumentation, lab service, commissioning, or similar technical maintenance backgrounds. We can train the right person on our systems.
You'll bring:
* Strong hands-on troubleshooting and a practical, safety-first mindset
* Confidence working in technical environments and dealing with clients professionally
* A focus on quality: doing the job neatly and documenting it properly
* Australian driver's licence + working rights
* White Card (nice to have, easy to obtain)

* Handling callouts independently where appropriate
* Clean reports and prompt close-outs
* Positive client feedback
* Fewer repeat faults through thorough diagnosis and resolution
