Physical Therapy Student Co-Op (Hyde Park)
Position: Physical Therapy Co-op Student post-bachelor's, Physical Therapy Outpatient (Hyde Park)
Location: Boston, MA
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Temporary
Position Summary: The Cooperation Education Program (Co‑op) allows students to integrate classroom learning with a paid work internship directly related to their field of study. Under the general supervision of the Rehabilitation Therapies Supervisor or Manager, the co‑op student will receive work‑site orientation and training. The student will learn on‑the‑job and will apply learned knowledge and skills to practice a variety of patient treatment and related duties in a positive, professional manner, adhering to hospital policies, following safety rules and regulations and striving for a positive work experience.
Job Responsibilities
- Learns to and then assists in patient treatment including basic therapeutic procedures/exercise, patient positioning, bed mobility, transfers, ambulation, gait training, and/or application of modalities such as ultrasound, hot/cold packs, etc. Assists with exercise classes.
- If enrolled in PT program, can provide patient treatments when deemed competent both in coursework completion and via therapist sign‑off on BMC competency.
- Documents patient care activities as applicable based on their educational curriculum.
- Keeps therapist informed of changes in patient’s reaction to treatments; assists therapist in determining an appropriate time of patient completion of exercise/treatment, based on physical and functional status. Communicates with nursing and medical staff on patient status.
- Interacts with all patients in alignment with hospital standards of customer service, following the AIDET model.
- Assists in daily tasks of all clinicians and front desk operations to optimize the patient experience.
- Sets up and cleans patient areas and equipment. Maintains upkeep of treatment areas, sets up and cleans after treatment completion; cleans hydraulics and splint pan as policies indicate; maintains linen and supplies as needed and notifies supervisor/manager of need to order more stock.
- Adjusts, maintains, and keeps inventory of equipment and supplies assigned to area.
- Attends in‑services and staff meetings. Attends in‑services on new equipment, procedures and programs.
- Performs other administrative duties as assigned including but not limited to photocopying, faxing, printing, data entry in Word/Excel, running various errands, etc.
- Utilizes hospital’s values and standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
Education and Requirements
- High school or equivalent required.
- Must also be actively participating and enrolled in a BMC approved college‑level co‑op program.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support
Experience
- No work experience required.
Knowledge And Skills
- Effective communication skills (oral and written) to deal with patients, families, therapists and various members of the healthcare team.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate in a courteous, pleasant, and qualified manner with patients, general public, staff members, outside agencies, and all other internal and external contacts.
- Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
Compensation Range
$19.00 - $20.00 per hour
