PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
This six-month Senior Journalist role, based in Sydney, leads BBC News' streaming output and iPlayer curation during UK overnight hours. Working alongside another journalist in Sydney, you'll deliver live coverage and short-form video for digital audiences worldwide. You'll also help prepare for a smooth transition to a new permanent role launching in Singapore in late 2025/early 2026, playing a key part in shaping the future of BBC News' global streaming strategy.

As part of the Live team, you'll produce live streams and curate standout BBC News content for iPlayer and global platforms. Based in Sydney, you'll work UK overnight hours alongside digital colleagues, ensuring audiences wake up to compelling, up-to-date news. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape digital output while supporting the transition to a new Singapore-based position.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
* Lead BBC News' streaming output during UK overnight hours, collaborating with a fellow journalist in Sydney to select and curate live and on-demand content.
* Produce engaging live streams using News Channel output and other sources, ensuring high editorial standards and audience appeal.
* Curate top news stories for iPlayer by clipping and packaging content from BBC bulletins and the News Channel, including creating compelling thumbnails.
* Ensure all content meets BBC compliance and quality standards, while planning ahead for the UK team's next-day streams.
* Provide guidance to the Sydney-based journalist and support collaboration with the wider Streaming and News Channel teams.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
* Strong editorial judgment with knowledge of BBC Editorial Policy, compliance procedures, and media law across digital platforms.
* Proven experience producing live and planned news content, with a solid understanding of newsroom systems, tools, and workflows.
* Insight into how audiences engage with video on streaming platforms, and the ability to use analytics to guide editorial decisions.
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced, agile environment, collaborating across teams to deliver high-quality output.
* Ability to manage shifting priorities and respond effectively to a constantly evolving news agenda.
