Overview

Conservation Employee - Fire Specialist role at Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

Base pay range
$75,422.00/yr - $78,333.00/yr

AWUGA, Level 3, $75,422 - $78,333 p.a. plus 12% Superannuation. This is a permanent, full-time position based in Collie or Harvey.

The South West and surrounding regions include various parks and reserves; the Ngari Capes Marine Park stretches along the west coast. The South West Region provides nature conservation, parks and visitor services, sustainable forest management, fire management, and land-use planning. The region's headquarters is in Bunbury with other work centres in Margaret River, Nannup, Kirup, Collie (Wellington District) and Harvey.


Responsibilities

* Undertakes pre-burn inspections as directed by the district fire team and updates maps as required.
* Provides specialist advice regarding terrain suitability and identifies required works to enable heavy vehicle access.
* Conducts audits and maintains fire equipment and the fire store.
* Supervises and leads Conservation Employees and contractors in a range of activities related to the department's works programs with a specific focus on fire management, and includes conservation, parks and visitor services and sustainable forest management.


Selection criteria / Qualifications

* Ability to supervise and coach others in a range of work programs, identify training needs, conduct training, and promote continuous learning.
* Ability to plan and implement works programs efficiently, organize resources, set day-to-day priorities, and ensure quality control.
* Proven ability to undertake prescribed burning, incident and fire management activities; willingness to participate in ongoing training; physically fit for on‑ground fire work and able to pass departmental fire fitness tests and medical requirements.
* Willingness to participate in fire management activities that contribute to bushfire suppression and prescribed burning, commensurate with capability and experience.
* Good oral and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in a team and with contractors.
* Ability to liaise with other parties to achieve positive outcomes and consider all factors before starting operational works.
* Good writing skills, including the ability to produce reports and programs; computer skills (Word, Excel) as required.
* Knowledge of basic fauna, flora and hygiene management; understanding of poisons, pesticides and herbicides.
* Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management or willingness to acquire.
* Understanding of work, health and safety, and equity and diversity principles and practices.
* Western Australian MR and C Class Driver's Licences.
* Applied First Aid Certificate (Desirable).
* Experience in construction and maintenance of infrastructure relevant to the department (Desirable).
* Current Western Australian C class driver's licence (pre‑commencement requirement).
