Austin Health has a long history of providing renal transplant services, with over 1000 transplants performed since 1974. Our team provides transplantation surgery to other services as part of the Victorian Kidney Transplant Collaborative (VKTC), offering live and deceased transplantation surgery to non-transplanting renal hub services.
The unit has a keen involvement with the Australian and New Zealand Kidney Exchange since its origins in 2010. Austin Health also plays an active role in the retrieval of deceased donor kidneys, owing to the Statewide Liver Transplant Service being located at Austin Health.
