Tell me about this role: The Export Controls & ITAR Advisor / Officer provides specialist support to Defence capability acquisition and sustainment programs. Working within CASG, SPOs and/or Headquarters environments, the role ensures compliance with Australian and international export control regulations, including ITAR, while supporting complex Defence projects across air, land, maritime, and joint domains. The position operates within an integrated project team and contributes to the delivery of capability outcomes by providing expert advice, governance, compliance assurance, and stakeholder coordination across export-controlled activities. Export Controls & Compliance: Manage and ensure compliance with Defence Export Control policies, ITAR, AECA, EAR, and relevant Australian export legislation Plan, lead, and conduct compliance activities, including internal audits, export assurance reviews and end-user compliance monitoring ITAR & International Engagement: Support execution of ITAR-related activities across programs Manage export-controlled information exchanges with international partner governments (e.g. US, UK, Canada), Defence industry partners Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with Defence stakeholders (CASG, SPOs, HQ, DSTG), industry partners and international stakeholders Translate technical export control requirements into clear, practical guidance Reporting & Continuous Improvement: Prepare reports, briefs, documentation, status updates and compliance reporting Maintain accurate records and version control of export documentation Essential Criteria: Current NV1 security clearance or higher Eligibility to access ITAR-controlled information Demonstrated experience in export controls / ITAR compliance within Defence or equivalent environment, interpreting and applying export control legislation and policy, project or program environments, preferably CASG/SPO Experience conducting compliance assessments and audits, risk management activities Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to translate technical requirements into plain English, work independently and within integrated teams, operate effectively in complex, high-pressure environments Desirable Experience Experience across Defence domains (Air, Maritime, Land or Joint programs) Familiarity with Technology Control Plans (TCPs), Export Control Registers and governance frameworks Experience managing export permits and international agreements Background in Defence project management or acquisition environments Advanced data management and reporting skills What’s in it for me?
