CAWLS is a busy community legal practice committed to providing excellent outcomes for our clients through legal advice and representation, financial counselling and other support services. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing domestic and family violence.
CAWLS is seeking a self‐motivated candidate with excellent communication and problem‐solving skills, and a strong work ethic to assist our legal team in the Alice Springs office. The right candidate will be passionate about improving access to justice for women. Excellent ongoing training and on‐the‐job support will be provided to the successful applicant.
Responsibilities
* Proactive administration, partnering with colleagues and clients from a strengths‐based perspective.
* General reception duties, including answering phones, greeting clients, completing initial intake documentation, daily mail run, actioning referrals, ordering office supplies, assisting front‐of‐house staff, and ensuring the office is secure.
* Assist clients in accessing CAWLS legal, financial counselling, and other services, and support lawyers during clinics, outreach visits, and other locations.
* Assist clients with intake procedures: conflict checks, intake forms, appointment bookings, notifying lawyers, and calling clients the day before appointments.
* Coordinate assistance from other services such as emergency housing and food vouchers.
* Assist the Client Support Officer in facilitating client transport.
* Maintain accurate client files in line with standards, privacy principles, and CAWLS procedures.
* Collect and enter required data for internal systems; provide reports when requested.
* Report any work‐health‐safety issues.
* Participate in projects and community events to promote CAWLS.
* Provide first aid as per training; oversee compliance and ordering of supplies.
* Comply with applicable legislation relating to legal practice.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
* No formal qualifications required, but previous experience in an office environment is required.
* High‐level customer service and office administration skills.
* Proficient with MS Word, MS Excel and Outlook.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills with diverse cultural and social groups.
* Excellent attention to detail and written skills.
* Ability to accomplish objectives within timeframes and manage workloads efficiently.
* Commitment to cultural safety when assisting women from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal women.
* Understanding of confidentiality and discretion.
* Client‐orientated approach with initiative and problem‐solving skills.
* Knowledge of issues faced by women seeking access to justice, particularly Indigenous women and those whose first language is not English.
* Interpersonal and relationship management skills; ability to work as part of a team and liaison confidently with stakeholders.
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team; willingness to support others and follow directions from legal practitioners.
* Commitment to reflection and self‐care to build resilience and minimise vicarious trauma.
* Current NT Driver's Licence, first‐aid certificate, ochre card and criminal history check (or ability to obtain).
* Previous experience in a Community Legal Service or similar role.
* Trauma‐informed training.
