SC1 Demonstrated knowledge and experience in assessing and supporting students with speech, language and communication needs within educational settings.

SC3 Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, families, allied health professionals and external agencies.

SC5 Demonstrated organisational skills, including the ability to manage caseloads, maintain records and contribute effectively to multidisciplinary teams.

Role

The Speech Therapist provides assessment, intervention, consultation and capacity‐building support to enhance inclusive education practices and improve outcomes for students requiring communication support.

Reports to Associate Principal - Support Services.

Responsibilities

Student Assessment and Support

* Conduct speech, language and communication assessments for identified students.
* Analyse assessment data and provide recommendations to support student learning and participation.
* Develop and implement individual and small‐group intervention programs.
* Support students with:
o expressive and receptive language difficulties
o speech sound disorders
o social communication challenges
o fluency difficulties
o language‐based literacy difficulties
o augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) needs.
* Maintain accurate case notes, therapy records and progress monitoring documentation.
* Work collaboratively with teachers, education support staff, wellbeing staff and school leaders to develop inclusive classroom strategies.
* Contribute to Student Support Group (SSG) meetings, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Disability Inclusion Profile processes and other case‐management meetings.
* Provide practical strategies and resources to classroom teachers to support communication and language development within mainstream settings.
* Liaise with external therapists, paediatricians and community agencies where appropriate.

Capacity Building and Inclusion

* Assist in building staff understanding of speech, language and communication needs.
* Model evidence‐based communication support strategies within classrooms.
* Support the implementation of inclusive practices aligned with the school's inclusion and wellbeing frameworks.
* Contribute to whole‐school literacy, oral language and engagement initiatives.
* Support transitions for students entering, moving through or exiting the school.

Family and Community Engagement

* Communicate effectively with parents and carers regarding student progress and support strategies.
* Provide guidance to families on strategies that can support communication development at home.
* Participate in multidisciplinary planning and review meetings.

Administrative and Professional Responsibilities

* Maintain confidentiality and comply with relevant privacy, child safety and mandatory reporting requirements.
* Ensure professional practice aligns with relevant legislation, professional standards and Department policies.
* Participate in professional learning and ongoing professional supervision.
* Contribute to school improvement priorities and inclusion initiatives.

Typical Duties May Include

* Conducting speech and language screenings and assessments.
* Running targeted communication or social skills groups.
* Supporting students in classrooms through consultation and modelling.
* Assisting teachers to differentiate learning for students with communication needs.
* Supporting Disability Inclusion Profile documentation and evidence collection.
* Developing communication supports, visual schedules and AAC resources.
* Providing professional learning for staff on communication‐friendly classrooms.

Who May Apply

Qualifications and Requirements

* Tertiary qualification in Speech Pathology or equivalent.
* Eligibility for membership with Speech Pathology Australia.
* Current Working with Children Check.
* Experience working with children and adolescents in educational or paediatric settings is desirable.
* Knowledge of Disability Inclusion reforms and school‐based support processes is desirable.
