Position Description
Civil Engineer - Asphalt & Bitumen
Location - Cairns, North Queensland
Employment Type - Full‑time, Permanent
Salary - $100,000 - $150,000 + superannuation, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated capability.
Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled and driven Civil Engineer specialising in asphalt and bitumen works to support the delivery of civil construction projects across North Queensland. This role will be hands‑on and closely involved with project planning, technical delivery, quality control, and site coordination, particularly relating to pavements, asphalt surfacing, and bituminous materials.
The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, site supervisors, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to specification.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical
* Provide engineering support for asphalt and bitumen-related works, including pavements, roads, carparks, and civil infrastructure
* Review and interpret design drawings, specifications, and contract documentation
* Assist with pavement design, material selection, and constructability reviews
* Ensure asphalt and bitumen works comply with relevant Australian Standards, specifications, and client requirements
* Monitor conformance of materials, mix designs, compaction, and surface finishes
* Identify and resolve technical and constructability issues on site
Project Delivery
* Support project planning, programming, and sequencing of asphalt works
* Coordinate with site teams to manage daily construction activities
* Assist with subcontractor management, including scope clarification and technical queries
* Participate in site inspections, testing, and quality assurance processes
* Assist with variations, cost tracking, and reporting related to civil and asphalt works
Safety, Quality & Compliance
* Promote and uphold strong safety and quality standards at all times
* Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, environmental requirements, and project-specific safety plans
* Participate in toolbox talks, site meetings, and safety inspections
* Contribute to quality documentation including ITPs, test results, NCRs, and handover documentation
Stakeholder Engagement
* Liaise with clients, consultants, suppliers, testing laboratories, and internal stakeholders
* Provide clear technical advice and support to project teams
* Maintain positive working relationships across projects and sites
Skills & Experience
Essential
* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
* Proven experience working with asphalt and bitumen projects, including roadworks and civil pavements
* Strong understanding of asphalt production, placement, and quality control
* Knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, specifications, and test methods
* Site-based experience in civil construction environments
* Strong communication and problem‑solving skills
* Current Australian driver's licence

Desirable
* Experience delivering projects in regional or remote North Queensland
* Familiarity with local council or state authority specifications
* Experience with subcontractor supervision and coordination
* Exposure to project cost control, variations, and reporting
* Experience working in live traffic environments
