Job Summary
The Senior SQL Database Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, optimising, and maintaining enterprise-scale relational database systems. This role focuses on SQL Server–based environments, ensuring data integrity, performance, scalability, security, and high availability to support business-critical applications.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
* Design, develop, and maintain complex SQL database schemas, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, and functions to support application and reporting requirements.
* Optimise database performance by analysing execution plans, tuning queries, implementing indexing strategies, and resolving bottlenecks.
* Manage database deployments, upgrades, migrations, and version control across development, test, and production environments.
* Implement and maintain high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions, including backup, restore, replication, and failover strategies.
* Monitor database health, capacity, and performance; proactively identify and resolve issues to ensure system reliability and uptime.
* Ensure data security and compliance by implementing access controls, encryption, auditing, and industry best practices.
* Collaborate with software engineers, data engineers, and DevOps teams to integrate database solutions with application architectures.
* Develop and maintain technical documentation related to database design, standards, and operational procedures.
* Support production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term corrective solutions.
* Mentor junior database engineers and contribute to database standards and best practices.
Minimum Education Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
Minimum Experience Requirements
* 3 years of experience working with relational database systems, with a strong focus on SQL development and database engineering.
Required Skills and Experience
* Advanced proficiency in SQL, including complex queries, stored procedures, triggers, and performance tuning.
* Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server (or equivalent enterprise RDBMS such as Oracle or PostgreSQL).
* Strong knowledge of database architecture, normalisation, indexing strategies, and transactional integrity.
* Experience with database performance monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
* Hands-on experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
* Familiarity with ETL processes, data integration, and reporting systems.
* Experience working in Linux and/or Windows server environments.
Preferred Skills (Optional but Acceptable)
* Experience with cloud-based database platforms (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
* Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and database deployment automation.
* Exposure to data warehousing concepts and large-scale data environments.
