About the Position:
We are looking for a talented Technical Design Engineer to create innovative, compliant, and high-quality engineering solutions that comply with statutory regulations, meet technical requirements, and uphold SMC quality standards. This role supports engineering operations while providing technical expertise and customer support to internal and external stakeholders. You will report to the Controls Engineering Team Leader and be an integral part of our national control systems engineering team.
About the role
You'll be responsible for
* Design and develop products and systems that meet Australian regulatory requirements and SMC technical, quality, and cost standards.
* Collaborate with Engineering and cross-functional teams to ensure designs are fit-for-purpose, cost-effective, and aligned with project scope.
* Produce technical documentation, including design specifications, manuals, and commissioning reports.
* Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge of products and support quality assurance as required.
* Assisting Sales with accurate costing, design info, and solutions for customer enquiries
* Managing customer relationships throughout the enquiry process
* Supporting product design, development, and manufacturing changes
* Conducting site visits and liaising with customers on technical requirements
* Providing prompt technical support to Production and other stakeholders
* Ensure compliance with Australian and international design standards.
* Verify quality throughout the design and manufacturing process, including inspections, testing, and root cause investigations.
* Manage design changes, RFS/RDC requests, and technical documentation in line with QMS processes.
* Prepare and maintain technical and operational references for production and maintenance.

Qualifications & Skills:
* Minimum 3 years' relevant engineering experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment (essential).
* Tertiary qualification in Engineering is essential: Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (preferred) or Bachelor of Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering with relevant industry experience.
* Electrical Licence is an advantage.
* PLC programming experience (highly desirable), including Omron, Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation), or equivalent.
* Proficient in 2D/3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
* Strong understanding of Australian and international design, quality, and compliance standards
* Skilled in costings, scheduling, and scope estimation to support customer and sales enquiries
* Proficient in root-cause analysis, problem-solving, and data-driven decision making
* Commercially aware with the ability to evaluate risks, change control, and lifecycle impacts
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
* Detail-oriented with strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise competing tasks
* Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS) and technical documentation processes
