Research Associate/Senior Research Associate – National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, UNSW Canberra, Canberra, ACT, Australia.
Employment Type: Full Time, 35 hours per week (Part Time option of a minimum 0.6 FTE may be considered for the right candidate). Duration: Fixed Term; 12 months. Location: Kensington, New South Wales. Visa sponsorship is not available; candidates must have unrestricted work rights.
Remuneration: Academic Level A or B: $123K–$145K based on experience + 17% Super + Annual Leave Loading.
Organisation: The National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, established at UNSW Medicine and Health, UNSW Sydney, aims to improve health outcomes for people with intellectual disability by advancing research, knowledge translation, and equitable health service access.
Responsibilities
The Research Associate (Level A) / Senior Research Associate (Level B) will contribute to a program of clinical and translational research in intellectual and developmental disability mental health, with a focus on autistic people. The role supports co-designed research, knowledge translation, and stakeholder engagement to inform policy and practice and improve mental health care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The appointee will lead or contribute to literature reviews, stakeholder consultations, strategic frameworks, grant applications, and dissemination of findings to professional and policy audiences. Within UNSW Sydney, the position reports to the Chair of Intellectual Disability Mental Health and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to design and deliver high-impact research and capacity-building initiatives.
At Level A, responsibilities include conducting and supporting research projects, developing project plans, contributing to publications, grant development, and student supervision. At Level B, responsibilities additionally include academic leadership, developing an independent research portfolio, leading grant applications, establishing strategic partnerships, and mentoring research staff and students. The position may have up to four direct reports, including research/project staff and PhD candidates.
Qualifications and Skills
At Level A
- A primary degree in medicine, psychology, nursing or allied health disciplines, registerable in Australia.
- A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated capacity in co-design with people with lived experience of intellectual disability and/or autism.
- Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to attract research funding.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
Level B additions
- Formal subspecialty clinical training, or extensive experience in intellectual and developmental disability health care and/or research.
- Commitment to keeping up to date with discipline-specific knowledge and developments.
- Track record in research leadership with high quality, high impact outcomes and ongoing excellence.
- Significant engagement within the mental health and disability sectors.
- High level communication and networking skills with a diverse range of students and staff.
