About the role
We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to join the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited (ALSWA) as a Managing Lawyer in our Broome office.
At this level the Managing Lawyer is required to appear as counsel in court in criminal law matters as well managing and supervising legal and non-legal staff within the Broome ALSWA office.
This position requires a person who is highly organised, self-motivated and is passionate about providing high quality legal assistance to Aboriginal people.
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.
Whilst based in a regional office, regular travel to regional and remote circuit courts is required.
Other responsibilities include weekend court appearances (on a rostered basis).
About you
To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:
* Demonstrated advanced post admission experience, including high quality advocacy skills in relation to appearing as counsel in complex criminal matters.
* Extensive criminal law experience, including a comprehensive knowledge of substantive law, the rules of evidence and criminal practice and procedure.
* Highly developed communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal) with experience in conflict resolution.
* Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.
* Demonstrated high level organisational, IT and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure.
* Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team comprising legal and non-legal staff with a willingness to learn and share knowledge with others.
* Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills.
* Ability to travel when required.
