Remuneration: $110,986 - $139,187 per annum

Positions are for applicants with RANZCO confirmed eligibility for the Vocational Training Positions (VTP) with a proven ability to deliver excellent clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The RETN – Western NSW Pathway is based at Orange Hospital with rotations to the Royal Hobart Hospital, Wagga Wagga, Liverpool Hospital, Westmead Children’s Hospital, Orange Hospital, and other accredited training posts within RANZCO’s training networks.

Trainees will work under supervision of Specialist Ophthalmologists to assess, investigate, diagnose, treat, and provide ongoing management of Ophthalmology inpatients and outpatients, performing clinical procedures under supervision or as approved, to provide high-quality patient care while building skills to become competent in Ophthalmology in accordance with RANZCO training requirements.

The Royal Hobart Hospital

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School. It provides most public specialist medical services for southern Tasmania.

The Ophthalmology Department has consultants with a broad range of subspecialty interests including vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, cornea, paediatric ophthalmology, and genetic eye disease.

The Eye Clinic is well-equipped with up-to-date facilities and equipment. The department provides an active teaching and research program in conjunction with the University of Tasmania.

The RETN ophthalmology registrar roster includes subspecialty and general clinics, laser clinics, injection clinics, and operating theatre sessions. The registrar will work in a team with 2 other ophthalmology trainees and an unaccredited registrar, participating in a 1 in 4 after-hours on-call roster.

Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with 325 beds, 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births, and approximately 11,000 operations annually. It is in the final stages of a $431 million redevelopment, with facilities including:

* 24-hour Emergency Department with telehealth capabilities
* A purpose-built Health Services Hub with various inpatient, outpatient, and training facilities
* Specialised Mental Health Unit

Wagga Wagga Health Service provides critical care, medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, and rehabilitation services, along with mental health and community health services, working with a multidisciplinary team.

Orange Health Service

Orange Health Service is a 270-bed major non-metropolitan referral hospital serving 300,000 people. It is the regional trauma centre for Western NSW with a fully FACEM-staffed ED. It offers comprehensive medical and surgical services, including interventional cardiology, radiology, and oncology, and is affiliated with the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University.

Other RANZCO accredited training posts are available throughout the RANZCO Training Networks, including rotations to Sydney and other accredited posts during the 5-year training period.

Qualifications - External

Please address the following Selection Criteria in your application:

1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
2. Completion of 2 postgraduate years of medical practice by the start of the new JMO clinical year
3. RANZCO confirmed eligibility for the VTP
4. Ability to work independently in a supervised clinical environment, with self-education and professional development
5. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and commitment to the organization
6. Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management
7. Participation and leadership in extracurricular activities benefiting the community
