Deputy Chief Engineer

About the Role
The Deputy Chief Engineer provides technical leadership across multiple product teams, supporting the delivery of secure and reliable systems. The role bridges engineering execution and strategic oversight, with responsibility for cyber security operations, test and evaluation, and architectural guidance.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide architectural and design guidance across a suite of ICT products
* Lead cyber security and test & evaluation functions
* Support DevSecOps practices and release processes
* Mentor junior engineers in areas such as virtualisation, containerisation, and secure development
* Investigate technical incidents and emerging technologies, providing advice to senior leadership
* Review and approve product designs in line with assurance frameworks
* Contribute to documentation, reporting, and stakeholder engagement
Skillful communication and interpersonal skills are crucial to success in this role, particularly in collaborative environments where different stakeholders have varying priorities and perspectives. A strong background in Windows/Linux environments, virtualisation, and containerisation is also expected. Experience with DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and secure software development is required.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* Degree in Engineering (Software Engineering preferred), Computer Science, or IT
* SAFe Practitioner certification (can be completed upon engagement)
* Experience with DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and secure software development
* Strong background in Windows/Linux environments, virtualisation, and containerisation
* Network engineering knowledge, including SDN and security practices
* Experience in software testing and evaluation, including tools like Zephyr Squads
* Familiarity with Australian Government security frameworks (e.g., ISM)
* Department of Defence experience
Security Clearance
* Must be an Australian citizen
* Ability to obtain and maintain an NV1 clearance or higher
