Overview

The University of Sydney invites applications for Education Focused Academics (Sydney Horizon Educators) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

These continuing education-focused (EF) positions support teaching excellence, contribute to research capability, and involve governance, leadership, and engagement within the school.

Successful candidates will join the Sydney Horizon Educators cohort and may access career development to enhance leadership in teaching and research.

Roles emphasize teaching (70%), research (20%), and governance/engagement (10%), with responsibilities including coordinating and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate coursework units, laboratory/tutorial/class deliveries, and teaching support for other unit coordinators.

Selected candidates will contribute to teaching and learning innovation, curriculum design and review, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

They will be expected to meet University education standards and maintain high-quality educational output while adhering to Work, Health and Safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Undertake a leadership role in educational innovation, curriculum design and review, contributing to outstanding educational delivery and outcomes
- Design and deliver high-quality teaching and learning experiences that meet the University’s education standards
- Deliver outstanding teaching and learning outcomes for students
- Develop teaching and unit materials, collaborating with more senior academics
- Maintain Work, Health and Safety requirements, including laboratory and/or field work
- Contribute through research and scholarly work to knowledge in your discipline, with a focus on teaching and learning
- Develop and refine education research skills related to evaluating and improving teaching and learning
- Maintain high quality standards in educational activities and outputs
- Contribute to governance, leadership, and engagement within your school

Discipline Areas and Roles

Several positions are described across faculties, including:

- School of Pharmacy — Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy (Education Focused) Level B/C
- Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery — Associate Professor in Nursing (Education Focused) Level D
- Sydney School of Health Sciences — Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy (Education Focused) Level C
- School of Medical Sciences (SOMS) — Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Medical Sciences (Education Focused) Level B/C

Applicants may come from a broad range of related fields within the discipline, such as pharmacology, pharmacy practice, medicinal chemistry, neuroscience, physiotherapy, physiology and related health sciences.

Roles involve oversight of one or more units of study, coordination of at least one unit, and contributing to unit content and teaching in their area of interest.

A strong portfolio of research in teaching and learning is expected.

About You / Qualifications

The University seeks education-focused candidates who understand curriculum and assessment design and who will contribute to student experience improvements.

Candidates should be capable of conducting education-related research (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) and guiding student learning in research, theory, and laboratory settings.

Education Focused Academics should have:

- a PhD or near-completion in a discipline-related field
- experience with assessment, feedback, and learning-by-design
- expertise in educational design, delivery, evaluation and outcomes
- a track record of research outputs in the discipline or education in the discipline
- developing networks with academic, industry, or professional partners
- experience supervising or coordinating teams
- commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence
- ability to teach undergraduate, honours and postgraduate learners in lectures, tutorials and practicals
- experience designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
- evidence of high-quality teaching, learning and assessment in a tertiary environment
- capacity to engage students and foster inclusive learning
- strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with colleagues
- commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
- high-level written and verbal communication skills

Senior Lecturers (additional capabilities): knowledge of education-related issues in higher education; experience as a unit/course/program coordinator; evidence of scholarly teaching and learning research; capability in leadership, governance and engagement.

Associate Professor (additional capabilities): ability to attract education-related research funding; leadership of curriculum development; sustained excellence in teaching and learning design; extensive experience in education scholarship; established network with partners; demonstrated ability to obtain competitive funding and to lead educational initiatives at multiple levels.
