The Company
A well-established Australian chemical manufacturing organisation producing high-quality consumer products from a busy, technically complex site. The business handles flammable liquids, hazardous chemicals, and batch processing - meaning safety, precision, and reliability sit at the heart of everything they do. The site has invested heavily in culture and has created a down-to-earth, diverse, approachable, collaborative environment built on people who genuinely want to help each other out and solve problems together.
The Role
Reporting into Engineering leadership, you will take ownership of the maintenance function on site — coordinating and leading a rotating cast of contractors across daily work, scheduled maintenance days, and improvement projects.
* Maintain and ensure the reliability of all factory equipment, including machinery (parts and pumps), filling lines, and manual, semi-automatic, and automatic machines
* Plan and execute preventative maintenance (PMs), respond to breakdowns, and troubleshoot issues as they arise using MEX maintenance software
* Lead and develop a small direct team (a part-time fitter and a full-time electrician), while coordinating technicians and contractors on scheduled maintenance days
* Manage permits (typically 2–5, up to 8–10 on bigger days), ensuring tight control around hazardous and flammable environments
* Process safety-critical PMs, breakdowns, and work orders to meet site safety KPIs
* Sit on the site safety committee and play an active role in driving a strong safety culture
* Manage purchasing for the maintenance function and build effective relationships with external providers
* Run small improvement projects that add variety beyond day-to-day maintenance
* Work cross-functionally with the Operations Manager and Production Supervisor, providing technical support to operators and escalating appropriately
* Operate on a 6am–2pm shift, with flexibility to stay back briefly when needed (time in lieu offered for any overtime)
Your Background
You are a hands‐on, safety‐first maintenance engineer / fitter who thrives in technically demanding environments and enjoys the variety that comes with a complex maintenance function.
* Qualified Fitter & Turner with a Certificate III in Engineering (or significant equivalent experience)
* 10+ years' maintenance experience, ideally within manufacturing — FMCG, chemicals, building materials highly regarded
* Strong mechanical and electrical fault‐finding capability, particularly in hazardous or flammable materials environments
* Demonstrated experience supervising tradespeople and coordinating contractors on site
* Proven ability to manage breakdowns, PMs, permits, and purchasing within a complex operational environment
* High level of safety awareness and a track record of complying with and improving safety procedures
* Comfortable using maintenance management software (MEX experience a plus)
* Strong communicator who can take direction from both Engineering and Operations leadership, and prioritise effectively across stakeholders
* Approachable, team‐oriented, and aligned to a constructive, solutions‐focused culture
