THE SCHOOL
Black Mountain School (BMS) caters for students with a moderate to severe intellectual disability in years 7-12 from the northside of Canberra. We are a centre for excellence in education and take pride in providing deeply personalised learning for all students.
BMS values the role allied health professionals play in improving the educational outcomes for young people. We have an onsite allied health team that provides multi-tiered supports to the students and staff in our community.
THE POSITION
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Occupational Therapist to join our BMS Student Engagement Team (SET) to be part of our multidisciplinary team comprising of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, social work, speech pathology and youth work.
This is an on-site position, and clinicians are required to work on school grounds for the duration of the standard school day, during school terms. Flexible working arrangements may be considered during stand down (school holiday) periods, in consultation with the BMS Director for Allied Health.
Occupational Therapists at Black Mountain School may provide consultation, assessment and intervention in the following areas:
* Equipment prescription including access to technology.
* Environmental accessibility assessment and recommendations.
* Accessible transport assessment and recommendations.
* Sensory processing, self-regulation, and social emotional learning programs for student self-management skills.
* Manual handling practices and training for staff supporting students with additional physical needs.
* Behaviour analysis within a multidisciplinary team to support individual students and classroom cohorts.
* Adaptations for school-based self-care tasks such as feeding, toileting (and toileting plans), dressing as well as access to the curriculum including but not limited to physical education and water-based programs, in school vocational programs (hospitality, horticulture, Woolworths) community-based excursions and programs.
* Application of the Multi-Tiered System of Support structure with a focus on universal supports in the school and classroom to support classroom staff (teachers/Learning Support Assistants) and students.
* Provision of professional learning to all school staff, including education and training to support trauma informed practices.
All positions will be provided support appropriate to the HP level, and clinical supervision requirements.
On commencement, pay increment and classification will be based on qualifications, years of relevant experience as an allied health professional and demonstrated ability to manage clinical and work tasks autonomously (e.g. caseload management, complex case management, relationship management).
All allied health professionals are required to provide consultation and support to school staff (in the area of their clinical expertise) and more experienced clinicians will be required to provide clinical supervision or mentoring to students (including work experience and university placement students) and to peers within the multidisciplinary team.
Eligibility/Other Requirements:
Essential requirements
* Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Therapy.
* Current professional registration: Occupational Therapist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
* Capacity to provide the lifting required for handling and positioning inherent in clinical intervention of clients and trial of equipment, in accordance with the relevant Workplace Health and Safety standards.
* Current drivers licence essential, including access to a private vehicle for work purposes.

Notes:Placements will be offered on the basis of organisational/profession need, Health Professional Level of available vacancy and applicants' availability. Full time and part time hours will be considered.
A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
