Achieve Something Great

An exciting opportunity exists for a Consumer Peer Worker to join the Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospital Consumer Peer Worker team. Our team is strongly committed to providing recovery oriented, trauma informed, and innovative approaches to supporting adult mental health consumers during hospital admission. Working within a multidisciplinary mental health recovery team, you will provide peer led interventions including individual and group support, advocacy for consumers, and participation in committees and working parties to ensure peer perspectives are embedded across the service. You will work collaboratively with consumers, multidisciplinary team members, and external stakeholders to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Drawing on your personal lived experience of mental health challenges, you will promote social inclusion and recovery by delivering recovery oriented education, support, and advocacy to consumers, carers, and multidisciplinary staff across the district. We are seeking candidates who are passionate about peer work, committed to providing high quality and safe care within a strengths based framework, and who uphold the NSW Health CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect, and Empowerment. You will have access to supervision, continuing professional development, and educational opportunities while working alongside experienced and highly skilled staff. If this role sounds like the right fit for you, we look forward to receiving your application.

Are You the Right Fit?

To be successful in this role, you will bring lived experience of life interrupting mental distress, a strong commitment to the consumer, survivor, and ex patient movement, and demonstrated experience applying recovery principles in practice. You will have sound knowledge of, and the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate, both individual and group peer led interventions, along with a clear understanding of recovery oriented services and the importance of consumer involvement in service design, implementation, and evaluation. A degree in a relevant field is required for payment at the Graduate rate.

You will have the ability and willingness to draw upon and safely share your lived experience in a purposeful way to support consumers throughout their inpatient recovery journey. You will work collaboratively as part of a cohesive team while also demonstrating the capacity to operate autonomously when required. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential, along with the capacity for self reflective practice and a proactive approach to engaging in ongoing personal and professional development.

Selection Criteria

To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below.

1. Personal lived experience of a mental illness, with willingness and demonstrated ability to utilise the lived experience, the values of peer support and the consumer/survivor/ex-patient movement to support others in their own mental health recovery journey.
2. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team and with a diverse range of stakeholders including service users, families and service providers.
3. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
4. Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate empathically, supportively, and effectively with consumers, carers and colleagues.
