Your New Role & Company:
This government department is seeking a skilled Senior Lawyer for a temporary 4-month contract. This role involves delivering strategic legal advice, managing litigation, and supporting departmental initiatives. You will work collaboratively to ensure comprehensive solutions and high-quality legal outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide strategic legal advice in areas such as administrative law, statutory interpretation, corporate governance, litigation, and commercial contracts.
* Identify and mitigate risks in priority projects, devising strategies to address these risks.
* Develop proposals for managing legal and contractual issues arising from departmental operations.
* Offer clear advice on litigation and legal disputes, including briefing Counsel.
* Supervise junior lawyers on specific projects.
* Oversee procurement of external legal work, ensuring accuracy and value for money.
* Promote excellence in customer service and collaboration within the department.
* Contribute to the development of self-service tools and training in key risk areas.
* Create environments free from racism and discrimination, ensuring all individuals feel safe and valued.
Key Selection Criteria:
* Must be an Australian lawyer holding an Australian practising certificate.
* Demonstrated ability to deliver timely, accurate legal advice in administrative law, statutory interpretation, commercial contracts, corporate governance, litigation, and dispute resolution. Experience in at least two of these areas is mandatory.
* Experience in general in-house or government legal practice, with expertise in areas such as environmental law, energy law, First Nations self-determination, agriculture, Crown land use, natural resource management, and fire and emergency management.
* Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, collaborative working style, effective stakeholder management, and systems thinking.
