We're seeking an exceptional Senior Data Scientist to join the team as one of our leading technical practitioners. This is a hands‐on, highly influential role focused on designing and delivering complex Data Science and AI initiatives that are embedded into real business processes and operating at scale.
While this is not a formal people leadership position, it carries significant technical and thought leadership responsibility. You'll guide delivery teams, mentor other data scientists, influence platform and ecosystem decisions, and work closely with senior business leaders to turn complex problems into practical, production‐ready AI solutions.
Your work will span the full lifecycle — from early prototypes and proof‐of‐concepts through to fully industrialised assets delivering tangible outcomes such as cost reduction, operational efficiency, improved customer experience, and risk optimisation across our clients' insurance and financial services businesses.
What You'll Do
* Lead the design and delivery of high‐impact Data Science and AI initiatives across our clients' engagement.
* Develop and productionise Generative AI models and pipelines to enhance core business processes
* Build Intelligent Process Automation solutions using advanced machine learning, with a strong focus on UiPath
* Design AI‐enabled decision support systems to optimise claims processes, cost control, and operational efficiency
* Deliver solutions across multiple modes — from rapid experimentation to governed, enterprise‐scale deployment
* Solve complex business problems from first principles, translating ambiguity into elegant, practical AI solutions
* Partner with senior business stakeholders to identify pain points and opportunities, and shape AI initiatives that deliver real value
* Act as a recognised technical thought leader, bringing emerging best practice into the organisation and separating hype from what works
* Communicate complex concepts clearly to audiences ranging from highly technical teams through to senior executives
* Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior data scientists and small (including offshore) delivery teams
* Contribute to the evolution of Suncorp's Data Science & AI ecosystem, including platforms, tools, and development practices
* Advocate for best practice in model development, deployment, governance, and risk management
Core Technical Skills
* Excellent Python programming skills and deep understanding of ML pipeline optimisation
* Strong knowledge of machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks
* Hands‐on experience building and deploying workflow automation on UiPath (mandatory)
* Experience developing low‐code AI agents on UiPath or similar platforms (desirable)
* Practical experience with Generative AI, including building POCs and prototypes
* Experience working with modern data platforms such as Databricks (desirable)
* Strong understanding of ML engineering concepts including distributed processing, parallel computing, and production deployment
Experience & Qualifications
* 7+ years' experience practising in Data Science, AI, or closely related disciplines
* Proven experience developing and productionising machine learning pipelines
* Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (Data Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or similar)
* Postgraduate qualification (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field is highly desirable, or equivalent depth through industry experience
