About us:

Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) governs one of the most culturally rich and geographically remote areas in Australia, spanning 15 island communities. Aligned with our Corporate Plan 2020-2025, we are driving key initiatives to ensure our region remains strong in the face of climate change and coastal hazards.

About the role:

We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Senior Climate Resilience Officer to lead the implementation of our Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS).

This identified position plays a critical role in protecting our island communities from the impacts of coastal hazards, while embedding local knowledge, cultural values, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge in adaptation planning.

Travel throughout the Torres Strait islands is a requirement of this position.

As CHAS Project Lead, you will:

- Drive delivery of coastal resilience initiatives aligned to Council's CHAS framework.
- Provide expert advice and support to Council and committees including the Climate Change Adaptation and Environment Committee (CCAEC).
- Work in genuine partnership with Elders, community leaders, TSRA, and other agencies to shape culturally safe, place based solutions.
- Empower communities to be informed, involved, and prepared for climate-related challenges.

What We're Looking For

We need someone who shares our values of One, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Resilience. The ideal candidate will have:

- Identify as Torres Strait Islander or Aboriginal and have a strong connection to culture and community.
- Qualifications - Certificate/Diploma in environmental science, coastal management, or related field, or equivalent practical experience (desirable).
- Project Management - Experience in delivering climate adaptation or resilience projects.
- Stakeholder Engagement - Strong facilitation skills, particularly with remote communities and cross agency partnerships.
- Technical Knowledge - Understanding of coastal processes, climate impacts, and community led adaptation.
- Communication Skills - Ability to simplify technical information for diverse audiences; solid written skills for reporting and policy input.
- Digital Literacy - Proficient in Microsoft Office; quick to learn new systems.
- Teamwork & Independence - Capable of working autonomously and collaboratively in remote, cross-cultural environments.
- Driver's Licence - Current open Queensland Driver's Licence.
