THE OPPORTUNITY
The Assistant Head of Junior School – Teaching & Learning / PYP is a senior leadership role responsible for driving excellence in curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across Pre-Prep to Year 5. Reporting to the Head of Junior School and working closely with the Junior School Leadership Team, this position plays a key role in delivering Somerset College's vision of Personal Success | Global Outlook | Shared Humanity.
The role provides strategic leadership in the design, implementation and review of Junior School curriculum, assessment and reporting, ensuring strong alignment with whole-College priorities and external requirements. A core focus is the leadership and ongoing development of the IB Primary Years Programme, supporting Year Level Leaders and staff to deliver high-quality, inquiry-based learning experiences.
Forward-thinking and collaborative, the Assistant Head identifies opportunities to strengthen assessment, reporting and teaching practice, using data and research to enhance student growth and outcomes. The role also supports operational leadership within the Junior School and may deputise for the Head of Junior School when required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Lead the design, implementation and review of Junior School curriculum, assessment and reporting
* Provide strategic leadership of the IB Primary Years Programme in alignment with IB Standards and Practices
* Oversee significant assessments including NAPLAN, ACER and internal moderation processes
* Act as the Junior School's primary liaison with QCAA for NAPLAN matters
* Lead and support Year Level Leaders to ensure high-quality, inquiry-based teaching and learning
* Drive evidence-based pedagogy, differentiation and Universal Design for Learning
* Analyse academic data to monitor student growth and inform teaching practice
* Lead professional learning, instructional coaching and staff development initiatives
* Coordinate parent communication related to curriculum, assessment and student progress
* Support Junior School operational and leadership priorities, including deputising for the Head of Junior School when required

* Extensive experience and qualifications in teaching, learning and curriculum leadership
* Deep knowledge of the IB Philosophy and the Primary Years Programme
* Strong understanding of assessment, data analysis and reporting practices
* Highly developed organisational, planning and communication skills
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate to a broad range of stake holder groups
* The ability to design and implement programmes in-line with the Colleges strategic plan
* The ability to lead change, build capacity in others and foster a positive team culture
