About The Opportunity
The School-Link (Mental Health) Coordinator plays a pivotal role in fostering strong, collaborative relationships between South Western Sydney Local Health District's (SWSLHD) specialist Infant, Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (ICAMHS) and educational settings across the region—including public, independent, and Catholic schools, TAFEs, Headspace, and other community services.
This unique opportunity involves promoting mental health awareness, facilitating early intervention, and supporting schools in managing and responding to student mental health concerns. The Coordinator provides expert consultation, training, and resources to school staff, helping them identify and respond to mental health issues effectively. Additionally, the role contributes to statewide initiatives aimed at enhancing mental health and suicide prevention strategies for children and young people.
What You'll Be Doing
The School-Link (Mental Health) Coordinator maintains and develops a network of contact, consultation and collaboration between the District Mental Health services (MHS) primarily between the LHD's specialist TIER 3, infant Child & Adolescent MHS (ICAMHS) and the Department of Education's primary and secondary schools located within the LHD. This extends to Independent and Catholic schools and linking services between the districts MHS and TAFEs, Headspace, secondary Community health services, the primary health network and Non-Government Agencies. The School link coordinator uses this network and communication to facilitate increased awareness of mental health issues that children and young people often present with in educational settings. The promotion of MH awareness to DOE staff facilitates early intervention through timely recognition of mental health symptoms in students and referral to the appropriate MHS. In addition the School Link coordinator makes available education, training and or frontline consultations to schools referring or supporting students with mental health or psycho-social concerns, or students transitioning back to school after acute episodes of care. The school link coordinator advises on strategies for the promotion and implementation of mental health promotion, prevention and wellbeing programs across the district and is a part of a statewide initiative between the Ministry of Health and the Department of Education to improve mental health outcomes and suicide prevention for children and young people in NSW.
Where You'll Be Working
SWSLHD Community Mental Health Services provide comprehensive, community-based mental health care across South Western Sydney.
These services cater to different age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and older persons, ensuring specialised care throughout various life stages. The multidisciplinary teams offer a range of supports, including mental health assessments, crisis intervention, care coordination, and therapy. They work closely with inpatient services, GPs, and other community organisations to provide holistic care.
The focus on community health and wellbeing makes SWSLHD Community Mental Health Services an ideal place to work, providing opportunities for professional growth and the chance to make a meaningful impact on the community.
