Position Description
Role: Deputy Section Editor, NZ
Reports to: New Zealand Senior Editor
Salary range : NZ$90,000 (negotiable)
Contract : Ongoing
Closing : September 15, 2025
Purpose of the Role:
The Conversation Australia & New Zealand is looking for an experienced journalist to commission and edit articles written by academic experts.
The Conversation’s unique publishing model pairs professional editors with academics to better inform public discourse. Editors work with academics and researchers to help translate research and evidence-based ideas into plain language, to share with our broad audience. That means liaising with our university partners – all eight of Aotearoa New Zealand’s universities are now part of The Conversation – and learning about what’s happening, especially newsworthy research or authors able to write timely analysis.
The Deputy Section Editor will work closely with our current NZ-based editors covering politics, business, science, health and environment stories. The Deputy Section Editor must have news media experience in New Zealand, including a proven track record as a news reporter, editor or sub-editor.
