Salary Range: $149,739 to $173,174 plus superannuation and leave loading, dependent on experience

About the Role
This role sits within the Design and Technical Governance team in Revenue NSW Digital
We are currently seeking to appoint a Principal Cloud Engineer to design, implement, and support our AWS cloud platforms, including service-to-service connectivity improvements such as the migration from App Mesh to Service Connect, and to help engineering teams build and operate applications reliably and securely.
In this role you will be responsible for designing, building, and operating secure, scalable AWS cloud infrastructure; automating provisioning through Infrastructure-as-Code; supporting application deployments and migrations; ensuring reliability and security of environments; and collaborating with engineering teams to deliver and optimize cloud-based solutions.
The Opportunity
The Principal Cloud Engineer is a senior technical leader who will shape and drive our cloud strategy across the organization. You will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and optimizing cloud infrastructure and services that support mission-critical platforms for NSW citizens and agencies.
Key Responsibilities of the role for Principal Cloud Engineer
* Design and build cloud platforms: Develop scalable, secure and cost-efficient architectures, including multi-account landing zones and service connectivity patterns (e.g., AWS App Mesh → Service Connect migration).
* Hands-on infrastructure engineering: Create and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform/CloudFormation, reusable modules, and automated environment provisioning.
* Developer enablement & CI/CD: Implement deployment pipelines, service templates and self-service tooling that allow product teams to build, deploy and operate applications in the cloud.
* Security, reliability & operations: Embed security best practices, observability, and resilience into platforms; ensure environments meet compliance and operational standards by design.
* Cost & performance optimization: Partner with FinOps to review usage, right-size resources, and improve efficiency of cloud workloads.
* Technical leadership & collaboration: Review solution designs, mentor engineers, translate business requirements into working cloud solutions, and support teams in modernizing applications.
* Design & build multi-account / multi-subscription landing zones.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Essential
* 6+ years of experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure roles.
* Deep expertise in at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP).
* Strong proficiency in scripting and automation tools.
* Strong proficiency in Terraform
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration, and serverless architectures.
* Solid understanding of networking, security, and cloud governance.
* Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Desirable
Preferred Certifications: AWS Certified Solutions Architect/Developer
