The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria's largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.
Unit Description
The Cardiology Department includes the Coronary Care and Step-down Unit, the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, a Cardiology ward, a Cardiology Day ward, and the non-invasive/diagnostic service. The Department provides care to emergency and elective patients with heart disease including ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and valvular heart disease. Major areas of clinical activity and research include the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia patients, and patients with adult congenital cardiac disease (primary service for Victoria). The Department also offers cardiac pregnancy service and cardiac genetics service.
In a 12-month period, approximately 4,000 inpatients are treated and approximately 2,700 patients underwent diagnostic or therapeutic procedures in the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories. Approximately 22,500 patients attended for outpatient consultations or outpatient investigations and approximately 2,200 attended for cardiac rehabilitation.
About The Role
As the Structural Interventional Fellow in Cardiology, you will primarily be based in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, performing and assisting with structural interventional procedures under the direct supervision and mentorship of the structural interventional cardiologists. Typically, the majority of your caseload will involve transcatheter aortic valve intervention, mitral and tricuspid interventions as well as device closure of PFO, ASD and left atrial appendages. The structural fellow will also assist with congenital heart disease diagnostic catheter studies as well as interventions in patients with congenital heart disease (including percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation, coarctation stenting, device occlusion of collaterals and baffle leaks, and other interventions in complex congenital heart disease such as in the Fontan circulation).
The role also incorporates participation in an on-call roster for emergency PCI cases – primarily for ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) - with the Unit providing a 24-hour service, all year round.
The structural interventional Fellow is expected to clinically assess patients both prior to and after their procedures and assist the ward team in the patients' peri-procedural management. The Fellow has primary responsibility in generating procedure reports through a dedicated software package (Prosolv) and assists in the completion of database forms for entry into the ATVT (Australian transcatheter valve therapies) registry.
Outside of the Catheterisation Laboratory, the Interventional Fellow will attend the congenital heart disease or aortic and structural heart clinic on a fortnightly basis, participate in Unit educational and audit meetings including organisation of the TAVI MDT and undertake research activities as appropriate to the position and its various commitments under the supervision of senior medical staff and/or University appointees.
