The Specialist Refuge Practitioner role focuses on providing enhanced short-term support to those accessing the Wodonga Youth Refuge. To address the issue of youth homelessness extending into adulthood, this service prioritizes promoting reconciliation with families to enable young people to remain at or return home.

This early intervention approach aims to divert youth away from the homelessness service system by offering a rapid response to those entering the refuge, addressing issues that prevent homelessness and family breakdown. This involves thorough assessments of the young person's developmental, psychological, health, and social needs, as well as specialist advice and support related to identified needs.

To achieve this, the Specialist Refuge Practitioner will work alongside the Youth Pathways & Reconnection Case Manager to provide input regarding the needs of the young person. Secondary consultation with other professionals may also be required.

Selection Criteria:

A relevant tertiary qualification such as Social Work, Welfare, or Behavioural Science, and/or proven relevant experience in this field is essential. The successful candidate will have experience in supporting and delivering services to youth with challenging behaviors, who have experienced trauma, abuse, and neglect.

They will also possess the ability to undertake thorough and comprehensive assessments of client needs and circumstances, and make recommendations based on those assessments.
