Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN2)
Location: Ravenhall Correctional Centre
Forensicare deliver comprehensive forensic mental health (FMH) services at the Ravenall Correctional Centre, as a sub-contractor to the GEO group. The FMH services comprises of a bed based service for 75 prisoners and a large outpatients program. Over 100 Forensicare clinical and corporate support staff are located at the new prison.
Nursing
Nursing at Forensicare has a strong focus on recovery-oriented health care that meets the needs of individuals with a mental health diagnosis who have a history of criminal offending or who may be at risk of offending behaviours.
Nurses at Forensicare are guided by the Forensic Mental Health Nursing Standards of Practice (2012), the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) Standards of Practice for Australian Mental Health Nurses and the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse
The nursing team at Forensicare is comprised of highly trained and motivated nurses who are experts in providing day to day care that meet the legislative framework and professional nursing codes of conduct and ethics for mental health.
Position objective
The Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN2) delivers care within a custodial mental health bed-based setting, practicing within a Recovery framework and using sound judgement to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain a high standard of patient care. In doing so, the Mental Health Nurse practices within the Ravenhall Charter, ensuring service integration and fidelity to the vision, mission, values and principles of the Charter.
The Registered Psychiatric Nurse performs in a Key Nurse role for an allocated group of patients and is responsible for the overall coordination of care for this group of patients. They also perform the role of Key Worker in relation to liaison with the patient's custodial case manager, and the integration of the Mental Health Recovery Plan with the custodial case management plan.
This position works within a multidisciplinary team to provide care and facilitate Recovery through the use of evidence-based treatment approaches. In addition, the Registered Psychiatric Nurse consults, negotiates and liaises effectively within a multidisciplinary team that works across Aire and Erskine Units.
Nursing staff may be rotated through the Aire and Erskine Units to assist in building a comprehensive understanding of the acute and subacute bed-based services, to provide professional development opportunities.
The Registered Psychiatric Nurse works under the supervision of senior nurses and does not undertake autonomous 'At Risk' or Initial Reception Assessments.
