Position Overview

Senator the Hon Nita Green, Assistant Minister for Northern Australia, Tourism, and Pacific Island Affairs, is accepting applications for an ongoing, full-time Chief of Staff to lead her ministerial and electorate offices.

This role can be based in either Parliament House in Canberra or in the Cairns electorate office.

Position Overview

This is a rare opportunity to lead a high-performing team across a range of both domestic and international portfolio areas.

It is a demanding, high-impact role at the heart of government requiring exceptional political judgement, outstanding leadership skills and the ability to manage a complex, fast-paced ministerial office across both Canberra and Cairns.

This position will require travel as required by the Assistant Minister to fulfil portfolio duties.

Responsibilities

* Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the ministerial and electorate offices, including staff, workflow, and office culture.
* Provide strategic political and policy advice to the Minister across her portfolio responsibilities.
* Oversee ministerial briefings, correspondence and other functions to ensure timeliness and quality.
* Manage relationships with departmental senior executives, stakeholders and community groups across portfolios.
* Identify and manage emerging issues, providing proactive advice to protect and advance the Assistant Minister's interests.
* Promote and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
* Manage all relevant human resources, financial and otherwise required reporting.
* Other duties as required to support the Parliamentarian and the effective operation of the offices.

Qualifications and Skills

* Significant experience in a senior advisory, political, policy role – ideally within a ministerial, parliamentary or senior government environment.
* A commitment to the values of the Australian Labor Party and the Albanese Government's agenda.
* Deep understanding of Australian federal politics and the machinery of government.
* Proven leadership skills with experience managing teams in high-pressure environments.
* Managing teams across different locations will be highly regarded.
* Strong knowledge of, or connection to, Northern Australia and/or the Pacific would be highly regarded.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Sound judgement, discretion and the ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters is essential.

Employment conditions

* A commencing salary between $151,364 and $183,976 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills
* In addition to salary, personal staff allowance will be payable of $37,364.
* In addition to salary, there is the provision of a private-plated vehicle – or allowance of $25,082.
* Total remuneration of: $213,810 - $246,422.
* Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements)
* An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable
* An initial probationary period of three months may apply and may be subject to extension.
* The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check and relevant security clearance checks as required by the Australian Government.
* Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
* The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
